As a professional photographer, there isn’t much that is more validating than having your work featured on the cover of a top magazine. I’ve been lucky enough to see my art on album covers, posters, hardback books, and even tattooed on a man’s body. But nothing prepared me for the recent thrill of having not one, but two of my photos of the legendary Doro Pesch grace the pages of two of Germany’s premier music magazines.
It all started when Doro shared an article about herself from Metal Hammer magazine. One of my all-time favorite photos of her, sitting in a purple chair, was featured in that article. I can still vividly recall the day I took that shot. The room had a velvet sofa and a chair that just radiated a special aura. I went into a frenzy moving all of the furniture aside from these two pieces, up against the far wall, rearranging the room, angling the sofa to catch the window’s light, and placing that chair front and center against a soft blue wall. When I had Doro sit in that chair, she looked absolutely perfect. Her makeup, her blue eyes, and the all black outfit popped against the background. As I caught the first few frames and quickly looked down to check them, I could tell she saw my excitement because she sweetly asked if she could see. I paused to show her the photo on the back of my camera and her face lit up.
But the excitement didn’t end there. I shared her post about the article, thrilled to have my photo in one of the world’s biggest metal magazines. Moments later, she messaged me, letting me know that another of my shots of her would be on the cover of November’s issue of Rock Hard magazine, one of Germany’s most popular music publications.
Doro is a rock and metal icon, not just in Germany but worldwide, known for her loyalty to fans and dedication to her craft. To know that my work with her would appear in both Metal Hammer and Rock Hard Magazine, in the same month, is an achievement beyond words.
Fun Fact: Doro was actually the very first rock star I ever photographed in concert, a decade ago, during one of her energetic performances.
Looking back, I’ve had the privilege of working on various projects, artistically, from album covers to hardback books. My photos have appeared in CD booklets, double album foldouts, and were even featured on the back covers of albums. They’ve been used for flyers and posters for concert promotion. Each experience has been a milestone, a chance to tell a unique visual story. Yet, being recognized and chosen by Doro Pesch, who has a background in graphic art, and values the photos that represent her, is truly heartwarming. It’s a full-circle moment because Doro was not just a subject; I’ve photographed and interviewed her many times over the last two decades. She’s the rock star who started my journey.
Having my work grace the cover of Hard Rock Magazine and featured in Metal Hammer is a milestone I’ll forever treasure. Sharing my vision with a global audience through these respected magazines is an honor. It’s a testament to the power of visual art in music and the enduring impact of iconic figures like Doro. I’m deeply thankful for the recognition and the chance to contribute to the world of music and photography.
